India Vs SL 3rd ODI

Thanks to Tatasky, Ten Cricket was added to my channels' list belatedly, after the first ODI. Fortunately, I was busy when our team was humbled in 2nd ODI. Now catching up 3rd ODI, on & off.

Wonder why no HD for cricket telecast @ Tatasky ? When I checked, call center executive said, 'WIP'!  ( That is an old, silly comment to make - no clear-cut deadline!!)

Sangakkara ensured his good run over the last 3 innings extended to the forth innings also. Wonder, is it lack of strategy on part of Indian think-tank or faulty execution - or both ??

Sachin is happily enjoying his time with family, away from all action. He was quite candid in his session with NDTV's SVP. The BMW 3 Series, red-hot in the background, was very distracting ! Meanwhile on ET whole lot of people have given their 'valuable opinions' !! Pls, let his decide, in discussion with Srikanth & co :)

Curious mix of advertisers :

  • Samsung utilises a star-sportsman Beckam so well.
  • But two of our own greats wasted: Sachin for Luminous wires & Salman Khan in chappals!! Pls .... can we be spared of these ?!
  • Kent featuring Hma Malini & daughters - consistent for a long time & effective communication.
  • CEAT tyres for bikes - communicates well.
  • Good, old Pilot pen featuring DPadukone!! Pilot used to be very aspirational, when we were kids.
  • Manipal university highlighting 24 X 7 counsellor !!
  • Nokia's ad has nothing to grab attention.
  • Duster ad is just good
  • Hero Scooter - silly ! What a waste of effort ?
  • That sick ad for perfume, Denver.

The show must go on... CRICKET !

Call Taxi Service Service @ Front-End

I am usually very loyal to brands.
My expectations are very basic from these brands. Same when it comes to a call-taxi: Pick up on time & a safe, peaceful drive to the destination.
I always make it a point to thank the driver & tip him.
I usually stick to Meru. They have been quite good in delivery, quality of cars are below average & drivers are all well-behaved. Also, have multi-city operations too.

Found & got similar feedback from others about the Chennai-airport service-provider ( though monopoly @ airport !)

Yesterday, they were unable to oblige. Thought of trying out another, new kid off the block !!
  • I had booked for 7 PM
  • Cab did not arrive. When I called driver at 710 PM, he did not pick up.
  • Their Call center, put me on hold & tried to reach. Was not able to reach the driver too. Then offered another driver "in 15 mts' ! I was already late for appt., hence declined.
  • I said no, stepped out, thank God got a Meru cab and proceeded.
  • On the way, very close to my place, there was a cab lying idle from the 'new kid...'
  • That was my 3rd & final attempt. Will be reluctant to experiment with these new kids-off-the-blocks!!
  • Glad to see they have a standard feedback,'cab didn't arrive'.
I feel sorry for the organisation which is not able to ensure quality delivery at the front end. Yesterday's newspaper carried ambitious expansion plans of the new operator. They are even starting premium services !! But, what about basic service delivery ? Need to fix these basics to ensure success in the long run...

Toyota is No 1, yet again !

Toyota has regained the Numero Uno position, in car sales, for H1 - 2012. Sales figures are as follows:

  1. Toyota - 4.97 million cars
  2. General Motors - 4.67 million cars
  3. VW - 4.45 million cars
For an average car customer, this is no longer relevant. In an era of recalls, across several major brands, his interest lies elsewhere - in SAFETY.

Hope, all the car mfrers have learnt the lessons from past and try to focus on leadership in safety also... a holistic market leadership !

Sachin Tendulkar to 'bat' for BMW

ImageResizerWM.ashx.jpg

BMW has signed up God of Cricket for their new launch, 3Series, in its new avtar !

Priced a bit higher, I feel. For a price-sensitive Indian market, it might be just a shade 'higher'.

Wonder, what will Audi & Merc do, to scale up their sales & marketing !

I travelled by Mumbai's local train

  • Last month, I had gone just upto the railway station ( in western suburb)
  • Last week, I went over the station:) Crossed over from East to West side. I did not walk across the railway tracks, but climbed up ! It was drizzling & very filthy, to put it mildly.
    • I had gone across to the private life insurance co office ( that is another story – my experience with this co !!)

·      Monday (23rd Jul 12): I decided to check out the train to travel within (humble) suburbs of Mumbai - to Vile Parle & back.
o   Primary reason was to save on cost. Also, to manage time,  finish off the work fast.
o   It was not raining. The weather was good. Did not bother to check the forecast. So, around 1330 hrs, I stepped out, to take a train journey, after over 5 yrs !!

·      I had to take the famous share-auto, could not go solo!
o   Once I reached station, I was the first to step out (last-in-first-out, LIFO). I pulled a Rs 5 note & extended to the auto-driver. He was already on phone (who is not on his/her mobile these days ? Whether people are walking, driving, riding a motorcycle... all are 'talking'!!)
o   I asked him, ‘how much?’, more thru gesture. He said, ‘Rs 10’ and resumed his important conversation on his mobile! ( 'itna bhi nahin malum' was written large on his face )
o   I paid Rs 10, mumbled ‘sorry, was not aware’… But the auto-driver has no time (or ear) for all those niceties.
o   So, over last few years, the auto-fare, on shared-basis, has actually gone up by a whopping 100%!! Power of Inflation !

·      At the railway ticket-counter, the rush was as usual. But Mumbaikar has a knack of getting in line & waiting, with a bit of patience. The moment the pace of his line’s  movement ( thus his own progress to the counter) slows, he would get restless.
o   Usually no one tries to act smart & get into the line. But, someone actually did try & a passenger, who was 3rd from the counter objected.
o   The villain blasted the guy in in queue. He derived his strength from the fact, he was ‘entitled’ to walk up to the counter directly ( first class ticket!) and he had an air of local-dada.  I also was planning to travel by first class & opted to stand in the queue
o   Amidst all the tamasha, there were couple of dogs sleeping soundly. Blissfully unaware of the ego clashes of the ‘master-class’, showing “no class” in handling a simple objection.
o   I wondered why was the villian not a little polite in handling a genuine objection? The villain had the right to go to the counter directly, but had the responsibility to be a little polite.
o   Changing values… I guess
o   I picked up a return ticket to Vile Parle & proceeded to the platform.

·         The suburban railway station has not gone any change over the last 5+ years. That was sad, I told myself. Mumbaikar deserves better railway stations &  trains.
o   I let go the first train, as it was a ‘fast’ one ( with limited stops)
o   I was tempted to pick up a mag & try out good old soda-lime drink (I had done that so many times, while working in Mumbai, commuting for client-visits)
o   I controlled myself and picked up only a mag
o   It was Business World – only after picking up I decided it did not have much value for me, as the cover-story was on “Richest Indians” - that is not my current pursuit... !
o   Chruchgate slow train came on time. I admire the punctuality. Had it been jet airways, they would have announced the ‘on-time arrival’. But fur Mumbai-locals, punctuality is in their DNA.

·      Inside the train, no much change either !
o   Thankfully, all those fliers have been taken off. It was clean to that extend. No ads – "free" medium to advertise for the over-smart marketeers & their clients ( NO free lunch pls !)
o   Earlier you would see many carrying newspapers, even if they were Miday, Mumbai Mirror or Gujarati daily/TOI, publications I don't really admire. But, that day not a soul carried newspaper. Was it because it was afternoon. Some were trying to catch a quick nap. Still, newspapers were very conspicuous by their absence !
o   Almost all were on their mobile phones, instead.
o   One of the passengers, sitting near window, was snoring loudly (I pity his wife/family!)
o   Many of them carried water-bottles. I was impressed! Mumbaikar is more health-conscious now?

I reached Vile Parle without much ado, completed my meeting & took a train back.
Return journey was no different.

People were too busy with their own lives, problems, etc. No one has any time for others. That is the reason, even after so many years/decades he is travelling in almost same trains. Mumbaikar is happy to have the life-line up & running. Never paused to ask, is he getting the best ? Does he not deserve something better?

PS : If I had travelled next morning, I would have not had such a pleasant experience. 10 to 12 trains were diverted for film-shooting & it rained heavily. I would expose myself to the vagaries of commuting in Mumbai, step by step, experiencing tougher proposition, at every stage.

More of it in future… if I actually try and come out safe!

Indian books on my Kindle soon !

I had posted recently about my evolving reading habit...Yes, I do still read :) I am not a TV-addict, hardly watch.
Would like to get into the 'voracious reader' category though ! http://mecarblog.blogspot.in/2012/07/changing-reading-habit-kindle-edition.html

Got some comments for my previous post. Hence sharing a news item, courtesy DNA-Mumbai.
Acc to the report, some of Indian titles will soon appear in e-book format. But some biggies in publishing, incl Penguin, seem to be getting the pricing-strategy wrong, as of now. E book got to be cheaper than the hard-copy - simple logic ( of an ignorant reader!)....

Let us hope penguins, rupas, et al bring more e-editions, at an affordable price, so that we can read them & also save some paper !

BTW, have you picked up your Kindle yet ? GO for 9' only - nothing to beat that product & with Amazon's fantastic customer service.

Happy Reading... ( Pls read, get away from your TV, computer & smart-phones... Let us be smart !)

All About Ads goes auto special with SVP on NDTV Profit

For all auto and/or marketing enthusiasts:

Watched a brilliant episode of All About Ads (AAA) on NDtv Profit.
The session was with SVP of NDTV, their auto editor.
The program covered the auto industry, the 'democles sword' of excise duties/tarrifs, experiential marketing & advertising. The program ended with 3 of SVP's fav ads.

Lower priced, entry-level SUV is an area of great opportunity for Indian mfrers. With Maruti's Ertiga, Mahindra's XUV500, Renault Duster etc the marketing is getting hotter at entry level.

Lovingly remembered Ogilvi's brilliant copy & my all-time fav in total auto-marketing : "At 60 miles an hour, the loudest noise in this new Rolls-Royce comes from the electric clock."

Changing Reading Habit : Kindle Edition

Started reading a book, borrowed from a friend. A bit heavy stuff. Wanted to make notes separately, being 'returnable'

Finished reading few pages. Then, realized, why not get a Kindle Edition !! Easy to 'highlight' and refer later. Will make the process faster also, compared to actually writing down. ( We write so less these days )

Was in two minds - to spend ( on Kindle Edition) or to read without making notes. Finally, opted for the former !

It was cheaper to buy a Paperback edition ( but reluctant for a book that will be referred to for a long time). But, Kindle edition was a lot cheaper than hard-cover. Plus paper saved ! (So much for environment!)

Perhaps, I can confess, I AM A KINDLE FAN !

RIP Rajesh Khanna

The first & the original superstar is away from us, at the blissful state. R I P.

We are afraid of deaths. We mourn death. But, we forget the important spiritual lesson of death.

Thank you, Kaka... for all those films & Kishoreda-songs.

Watched some of the reports on TV. That was a period when movies were simple, songs great...
But, now we have a lot of vulgarity, crude violence and masala. Sadly, Rowdy Rathore ( with son-in-law of Rajesh Khanna!), Singham, Bol Bachchan, Gangs of Wasseypur, ( may be Jism 2 shortly ) are all very big hits ! Perhaps this trend represents the state of our society ?!

Three months since I got back. Yet to watch a film :) That is the choice I can & will make. I am still waiting !

Jism 2 Mailer from Airtel

Just received a mailer from Airtel with the Jism-2 poster.

Of course, I have 'Unsubscribed' to their e-mails.

Not expected from a reputed brand such as Airtel to promote vulgarity. Very sad !

With a Cricket Legend at Airport

Great to be back home, after a week away 'on work' !
Not work, in its sense the corporate world considers work, but my own definition, within my 'third innings' phase :)
Amchi Mumbai rocks !! At its best during monsoon...

As I drove to the airport, at Blore, I was happy to note the difference in the landscape, already, post few good showers.
Thank God, for the showers...pray, let more torrential-type come down...

The idea of having airport so far away from city has its own advantages & disadvantages. As I took the route via Budigere ( or Mudigere?), I thought...till couple of years ago, that belt, especially areas around Devanahalli, would have been like thousands of remote, Indian villages. But, now they will see so many vehicles & passenges passing by, always in a hurry to reach airport.
I was no exception, as I pushed taxi-driver to press accelerator more, as I was taking no chances of delayed arrival at airport & refusal to board by Jet Airways.

As I moved up the elevator in Blore airport ( escalator-area under renovation.... already !), I saw the cricket legend coming toward the elevator. I hoped, he travelled by Jet, same flight I was to take.

On an earlier flight to Mumbai, I got in early & as always, had a sound sleep, most of the flight. But when we waited for arrival of buses at Mumbai, another passenger form the same first row (all-economy flight!), but on the other side of aisle, caught my attention! As all the passengers waited, Jet Airways was taking a VIP passenger in a special vehicle, ahead of us, mortals :)

A fellow passenger, standing next to me commented to Jet-staff, 'you give preference to a cricket legend, when one of greatest scientists sitting patiently just two rows behind'. I looked behind, there was the familiar face, of a great scientist. Jet Airways staff gave some feeble response!

I thought, the legend may travel in the same flight with me to Mumbai ! "High hopes", kid would have added :)

I politely subjected myself to the security check, something I always do in fond-rememberance of my late father, who was a career-fauji, an exemplary one that too. This is not a child saying, 'my father greatest'. But a seasoned corporate-executive with over 20 yrs experience !

Suddenly, I saw the Legend was right behind me. As I stepped down from the pedestal, I saw the security staff asking the legend to put his wallet on the x-ray machine - and the latter was not really enjoying, neverthless complying, quickly. There was an element of speed in all his actions, a sense of urgency, I felt. For a legend in his 'third innings', ( or 'second innings' as per the cricket world), I felt he was in too much hurry. But then, I was in a hurry to take a quick bite before the flight, having not 'broken' my fast till noon !!

Just for records, this legend called it a day, few days after I called it a day. Couple of friends made comparisons of the timing.... but all similarities end there.

As I picked up my Macbook from the tray, the legend was next to me, picking up his wallet from the tray, right next to mine. Then he took his tray & placed it on my empty tray and placed it on the x-ray machine.

I was relly impressed by this gesture. Usually we would at best take our stuff and walk away. But, the legend went a step beyond.

As I collected my bag with couple of books, pulled out wallet, pen etc from laptop bag & put laptop in the bag, I saw him proceeding towards the book-shop, 'Crossword'. I thought may be he wanted to check if his recently-released book was on display or might check the reponse to it... :)

As my stomach was protesting, I proceeded to the other end, ordered for a mysore sada dosa. It was while having the delicious dosa, I realized 'I did not say a customary thank you' :(

I could have spoken to him. Also, given him reference of a 'mutual friend', in case he was in no mood for a conversation.

Second time/flight unlucky... At least next time I will carry a copy of TIMELESS STEEL & may be just say 'hi', without interefering with his thoughts & quick movements !

Proud of you, Rahul Dravid. Not for the 'tray-incident' @ airport, but the value-system you represent. God Bless

Check out this song from the episode of Satyameva Jayate

Save Tiger Mobilization very low

Kudos to NDTV and everyone else involved with Save the Tiger campaign.

The campaign has been handled very professionally, end-to-end. It is very important how the whole thing executed. Great job, NDTV & Team.

But I was dissappointed we have mobilzed just Rs 5.81 Cr this year. I thought we would double from last years Rs 4+ CR. We are either ignorant of the importance of this campaign or just ignoring the case! Friends from corporate sector, should we not double ?! We would get excited to double our business targets :)

We owe it to future generations to build on this campaign & make a success of it

Jet Airways Customer No More a KING

15 Jul 2010:

Here is a kind reminder to Jet, with lots of love & best wishes...

It's easier to love a brand when the brand loves you back

Worth thinking about that the next time you're annoyed at a customer.

 http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2012/07/its-easier-to-love-a-brand-when-the-brand-loves-you-back.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+typepad%2Fsethsmainblog+%28Seth%27s+Blog%29&utm_content=Gmail

13 Jul 2012:

Ran into this good friend at Mumbai ariport. A passionate Jet Airways customer - but a bit upset ! When enquired, gave this update :

He has been a member of Jet Privilege for long time ( has been their brand-ambassador, we would often pull his leg)
He used to be a Platinum member, before he moved to Gulf. When Jet introduced flights to Gulf, he shifted totally to Jet. Makes multiple visits to India, all on Jet !

He had been though critical of the fact Jet don't consider family members as one frequent flier ( no thereof!) They don't consider in toto !! So each of his family member is a jet-privilege member too !

He has been totally with Jet, at times paying premium over alternates !!
Now, he is unable to tele-check as jet does not allow blue/blue plus travellers ! No consideration of Platinum level earlier or of travelling on international routes !

Rules are necessary, he agrees. But, customer should be retained.

He plans to now explore multiple flight options, esp on international routes ( with a vengeance, I must add!)
Will now join the list of unhappy customer, from an earlier role of brand-ambassador !

Smiling Dara Singh

Dara Singh was the original superhero. Even before Phantom, Superman, Batman & Spiderman...We grew up looking up to Dara Singh as the ultimate muscle-man.

NDTV's tribute was well-compiled. But I thought they have picked up all shots where he was always smiling. Quite difficult, for an action-hero, I thought.

Then, read his son saying, 'Dara Singh died smiling'

ET quotesd Jaspal Batti was told by Dara Singh, 'even in a wrestling bout he, would try to keep smiling till the end' !

When we think of him, only his smiling face comes to our mind. That is real greatness. How many people can we think of in our friends/relatives/colleagues/beyond and their smiling face comes to our mind ? Try to think... At best, a stand-up comedian may be able to & not many...

We can blame it on the world around us that we are able to maintain a smiling-disposition.
May be we are unable to make others smile either ! We are not making others comfortable in our presence... Spare a moment to think !

I will always remember him for his smiling face, than his wrestling accomplishments.

Worth-emulating. It may not be possible to achieve his level of physical fitness, but definitely worth trying to 'KEEP SMILING' !

Try out... the world will be a better place to live !

Leadership Tata Way

One of the most inspiring leaders from Corporate India (Mr Ratan Tata), belonging to one of the most respectable & ethical business groups ( TATA), will step down this year. His track record is one for all of us to be proud of. Under his leadership, we have seen the group grow in geometric proposition. I have told some many of my friends in Middle East, 'JLR now belongs to TATA' !!

The group has have retained their belief in value-system.
As the world hits new lows in corporate ethics ( LIBOR being the latest at global level!), thank God there are business entities which believe in ethics.

In his 'Third Innings', Mr Tata will focus on some fundamental issues that plague our country. Inspiring... worth emulating.
http://www.livemint.com/2012/07/09161240/Ratan-Tata-reveals-his-postre.html

Few days ago, read on HT: BE YOURSELF. YOU'LL LEAD WELL.

Very inspiring & appropriate advise from Mr Ratan Tata.
Perhaps very difficult to implement ? We tend to wear the mask and hide from our true selves, often.
But be ourselves means being in sync with our true self, inner self, which is Divinity and being at peace. Worth trying....

Disruptive Innovation in Career

Most often we barely live - at work & beyond. Most of our time is spent for & at the work, physically & mentally. We just hang-on to the work, mechanically

Here is an interesting thought on 'disruptive innovation to a creative career path'

Time to GO & Disrupt, your career ! I am in the process & enjoying every bit of it :)

Happy Career Disruption !

Musically Yours

10 JUL:
World is still not exposed to real music, Divine, Classical & Spiritual. Part of the blame lies with us, as we are not responsible inheritors of this great legacy.

9 JUL: It is raining in Mumbai! On & off! Overcast conditions too. Looks like a rainy day... Thank God, monsoon seem to be picking up. Hope, rest of India & beyond getting sufficient rains ( even though we countinue to contribute to global-warming & polluting indiscrimately!)

Plain dosa for break-fast. I would rate plain dosa ( home made, surely) as my choice of '10 Foods Before You Die'!

Listening to Evari Bodhana/Abhogi raga, by Sri Kadri Gopinath on Saxophone - Album, A Tribute to Adolphe Sax

FAB FELINE JAGUAR REVIEW

Many of us are car-enthusiasts. Couple of my friends are die-hard fans of JAG ( though one of them happily driving a Prado ( pronounced also as BRADO!) in ME !

Some of them love a well-written article - for the pure joy of the written word. Hence, love authors such as PG Wodehouse.

Most of us look at the basic features of a car and of course the aesthetics, such as looks, dashboard, seating comfort, etc. As such we are looking for car-reviews that answer our queries. ( I did a 'google' for such a review on Renault Duster, but did not find one - may be I need to fine-tune my 'googling-skills!)

Came across such a review by DNA Team - hence sharing ! Happy Reading & Safe Driving...

May you drive your dream car !

Chinese car exports to emerging markets

Excellent article on how
  • Chinese auto makers are increasing their presence in 'easier' markets, such as part of BRICS -Brazil, Russia, S Africa and ME -  Algeria, Iran, Saudi Arabia.
  • Smartly ignoring US & EU ! (Blue ocean strategy!)
  • Reason - value for money! ( hope it does not come at the cost of quality - after all, compared to big brands, how many smaller brands have come forward with recalls, in spite of inferior quality & less stringent quality-control !!)
  • But then, with JD Power reports, et al, the Chinese brands will start improving their quality score & learn to manage it !!
  • Established brands are keen to ramp up nos in the 18 million units Chinese market - again, right strategy.

Frugal Innovation

Inspiring stuff.

Most of global market is ready for frugal innovation. Take the case of a car or a cell phone. Most of features are actually not very essential to most of owners.

Of course, without compromising on environment, safety.

http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2012/07/frugal_innovation_lessons_from.html

PS : Jugaad somehow has a negative connotation. Like, 'vasta' in middle east. Every market has its own 'lobby' !
