Volkswagen-owned Bugatti Automobiles is set to launch their Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport (http://www.bugatti.com/en/grand-sport.html), super-premium car with price starting at Rs 16 crore, costliest in India till date.
Assembled by hand at Molsheim in France, 150 units would be produced of the car powered by a 16-cylinder engine. ( almost 1 CR per cylinder J!)

It can hit a top speed of 407 km an hour and reach a speed of 100 km in a little over two seconds. ( on which stretch of Indian road??? No clarification yet !)

The delivery time period for the car would be 6-8 months... Happy driving !

VW on course to reach the summit

VW is set to hit the no 1 slot, in sales and profitability by 2018 - DAS AUTO !

They are set to hit a new high, much more than last years record 6.29 mn cars & SUV

They will have to scale up their volumes in key markets such as India and Middle East (ME). Recently I checked with few friends here in ME about the newly launched 2011 Touareg. The response was on the familiar lines, low on re-sale value, popularity, et al... Toyota/Lexus is way ahead of the competition here.

In India too, VW has a token presence, as of now. To take on Suzukis/Tatas/Hyundais, lot of hard work....!

PS : Volkswagen means "people's car" in German. Its current slogan is Das Auto (in EnglishThe Car). Among its largest owners are the Porche family, the Emirate of Qatar and the state of Lower Saxony ( Wikipedia)

Toyota loses, Honda & Nissan gains

September stats

Toyota :
·         The market leader is weighed down by the recall crisis… over 11.5 million vehicles, world wide..many experts feel a PR disaster! ( They still have the guts to recall, not brush under the carpet!)
·         Expected overall loss – over 2 bn USD !
·         Toyota’s total number dropped by 1.3 % to 672 K vehicles

Nissan Motor - global production soared 27.0 percent to 395,658 units

Honda - worldwide production rose 9.2 percent to 328,368 units

Japanese automakers, although enjoying strong sales, are struggling to cope with the yen's advance against other currencies, which erodes their overseas revenue when repatriated.

Made in India car from Maruti Suzuki

India's No. 1
Saw this press report…
  • ‘MADE IN INDIA’ Car from Maruti Suzuki, finally ! – bahut der kardee?! Should have been done much earlier considering India is one of the key markets for Suzuki and the power of Indian brain!
  • As a part of the company's strategy to develop and design future models in India- “the company is yet to fix a specific timeline for it," let us hope the timelines finalised so that we can see the project fructify and we can drive a Made in India car, not only in India, but here in Middle East & beyond
  • recruited top engineers from US auto companies in Detroit- power of Indian brain…reverse brain drain. Hope they come back with strong environmental consciousness!

The R & D centre-the first outside Japan-is coming up at Rohtak at an investment of Rs 1,500 crore. Spread over 700 acre of land, the first phase of the project is estimated to be completed by 2012. The company had stated in August 2009 that Maruti Suzuki is going to design and roll out a car that would be totally developed in India – Wow ! I hope they would come up with something closest to a zero pollution vehicle!

Ford results

Ford Middle East sales rose nearly a third during the first nine months of the year, with sales in Saudi up nearly 50 percent, the US-based car marker announced on Sunday.

Sales in the GCC increased 31 percent between January and September 2010, compared to the year-earlier period, the company said.

Passenger models rose 34 percent, propelled by the introduction of the new Fusion and Taurus brands. Ford, Lincoln and Mercury SUVs and trucks remained popular, with sales up nearly 27 percent.

Saudi Arabia, the Gulf’s wealthiest state, proved the strongest market for Ford, with sales up 50 percent in the first nine months. By comparison, UAE sales were up ten percent.

“2010 has proved to be a good year for Ford,” said Larry Prein, managing director, Ford Middle East. “The strength of our product line-up is being recognised here in the region.”

Art Exhibition by Renault

IT WAS INDEED A
UNIQUE AND EXCLUSIVE EVENT... THANKS TO RENAULT

Renault is a company that is incredibly aware of the societies around it, and it takes great care to interact with societies in other ways than simply on an automotive level. One of these ways is the art world. Renault takes pride in its history of cooperation with the art world. As a brand, it has helped to sustain and promote artists and their creations, as well as helping to position French culture in the public eye.

By being proactive in the art world, Renault sees this as an ideal way of expressing its French values and origins worldwide. Renault has fostered relationships with contemporary artists over the last 20 years, leading to the organization of a unique art exhibition from the extensive Renault Art Collection.

The exhibition demonstrated the richness of western creativity during a pivotal period in painting. Exhibiting the main abstract tendencies in western art during the 1960s - 1980s period, the event had a wide selection of almost 40 paintings from artists such as Victor Vasarely, Henri Michaux, Julio Le Parc, Juan Miro, Roberto Matta, Dominique Thiolat, and Pierre Alechinsky.

One may think why an art exhibition by a car company ? But, is n't driving more than mere commuting ? It was an elevating experience ! As such Renault would have won over a few hardcore Toyota cusotmers too...!

There is an artist in everyone of us... There is a manager in every artist :)

Drive Safely

A blonde was swerving all over the road and driving very badly, so she got pulled over by a cop. The cop walked up to her window and asked, "Miss, why are you driving so recklessly?"

The blonde said, "I'm sorry sir, but wherever I go, there's always a tree in front of me and I can't seem to get away from it!"

The cop looked at her and said, "Lady, that's your air freshener!"

Toyota Slips in New Global Brand Ranking

Toyota slipped in the new ranking, not surprisingly, after a series of brand recalls :

  • Toyota lost its brand value this year to rank 11th (8th)
  • Mercedes-Benz ranks number 12.
  • BMW is in the 15th position.
  • Audi at 63
  • Hyundai at 65...we will see more action from these two brands for sure !

Ford's launch of the new Fiesta, which became a fixture on YouTube, Flickr, Twitter and Facebook, was praised as one of the best examples of "how to use social media."

Coca Cola is No.1 and IBM, No.2, followed by Microsoft, Google & GE being top 5

Indian car market hit a record in August

On a short vacation @ Mumbai, India... commercial capital.

Most of the leading dailies reported record sales in August 2010. (We get excited about new peaks/records)

Key numbers for Aug 10 ( Aug 09) Growth percentage:

  • Cars - 160,794 units ( 120,681) - 33 %
  • Commercial vehicles - 52,030 ( 40,609) - 28 %

YTD (Apr-Aug) car sales registered 34 % jump at 753K cars sold.
Inflation has forced government to maintain higher interest rates, expected to go up further. The marginally higher interest rates does not seem to have affected the TIV, thankfully.
While the reports highlight the jump in TIV over last year, they don't mention 2009 was not best of years, after all.

Monsoon at country-level has hit over 100%. That should augur well for the next agri season...which would translate to a very positive outlook for economy, including automobile. Moreover, car sales normally peaks at Diwali... The suppliers should be able to ensure steady dispatch of components in view of the thrust in demand, a likely dampener.

Overall, interesting times ahead for India's automobile sector.

Middle East Online

A write up on Dubai Metro.

While the majority have still not lapped up the same, Government is going ahead with the rest of the project ( at a huge cost). All credit to Government, for staying on course. . .
Govt needs to work on the connectivity with localities and the stations, to make it convenient for the commuter, esp during the hotter and always-humid conditions...

Of course, a push on awareness on pollution will help too.

The commuter needs to look at his carbon-footprint too...

An article based on a simple survey on the commuting habits ( to work):

Survey shows lack of interest in GCC public transport - Transportation - ArabianBusiness.com

PS - Stating the obvious, I felt. No depth in the article. As the world moves to environmentally sustainable models in all areas, we commuters in Middle East should move to public transport too. Surely, a hidden demand waiting to be tapped ! Dubai's Metro is a brilliant example, how people have accepted it wholeheartedly.

Mazda 2 Launch

I personally had a chance to get to know the planned launch of this car.

Mazda is not in to big numbers, but they operate on a niche segment. Some of my friends, who drive Mazda, are very satisfied with the brand and service. They plan to stay within the Mazda range of cars. That is interesting. I have not heard such consistent comments from any other brand owners.  That is the strength of Mazda in KSA. With this launch, they have widened the range and has a product to target the youth segment.

It is great, even in a market such as KSA, they are raising the bar with this model and highlighting their eco-friendliness, fuel efficiency, etc. The youth need to be aligned with these important issues anyways...

Knowing HHA, they would ensure this segment with its own youthful preferences and tastes, will satisfy them.

That must some releif for Toyota, weighed down by the 'dents' on their reputation, courtesy recalls. GCC has been comparatively insulated from the recall crisis. But, the iconic brand in entire GCC has suffered a loss of faith.

BMW is a bigger surprise. My personal obeservation is people prefer Mercedes Benz over BMW.

While across GCC, quality of service remains a big opportunity for all car dealers, it is a fact the car-owners are not desciplined when it comes to their own responsibility to drive for timely servicing! (That adds to the risk on the road... )
If dealers focus on after sales, they can earn a lot more and retain many more customers too..

Happy Driving... safely :)

My Car 'beauty-parloured' !

This year, may be thanks to the worldwide phenomenon called 'Climate Change', we had some good weather till recently. Some parts of Middle East even got showers. The weather was pleasant, the trees/plants looked greener, the urban landscape looked cleaner. Some areas were flooded causing some hardships. For many passionate car-owners, the regular trips for a thorough wash became more frequent.

This afternoon.... it was very hot. But the need to drop off my son for classes forced me to step out. On the way back, I decided to stop by at the service center. The fact every car was taking more than usual time, forced me to stay on a bit longer. That enabled me to make these observations....

Though the crowd at that point of time was negligible, as temperature improved towards the sunset, more car-owners reached.

  • Virtually every major brand had its fair share of representation. But the market leader, toyota, had very low representation.
  • A Lexus SUV, Suzuki Grand Vitara (aspirational in India!), Opel ( still around!?), Pajero, BMW 5, VW Toureg, a vintage Merc, GM Trailblazer & Tahoe...
  • The owner of black Suzuki vitara was the most demanding customer. He even took the car back for further washing, when same was half way through drying.
  • Owner of BMW 5 Series was seen snatching the cloth and giving finishing touches to his seat, clearly not satisfied with the staff...
  • Trailblazer-owner went around with a tissue-box and guiding the staff to come up to his level of cleanliness. (Management by example !)
  • A camry, an accent, a Honda accord... they came quietly and fell in line..
  • Pajero owner, a young guy, managed to jump the queue!
  • Meanwhile, another Pajero drove directly to the drying section. Cleaned up, along with the staff. He came in with a mess, clearly after a long journey. He went with an interior spotless, thanks to the combined effort... He was seen whistling around towards the fag-end of the cleaning effort, perhaps satisfied with the outcome. Or downplaying the big dent on the right side which ensured the door made a creaking noise when opened? ( He was quick to slam the door closed and not to touch it again, obviously a bit embarrassed!)
  • Some of them smoked continuously...wonder, why the tension at all ?
  • I did not see the staff being tipped at all, which prompted me to tip them liberally today! Afterall, it is quite hard work, semi-skilled, I would add....and, hot weather !
  • Just as we have preferences when it comes to hair-cutting saloon and the specific guy at the favourite saloon, some customers had preferences here too. They allowed others to go ahead just to ensure their favourite machines would be in the safe hands of their preferred staff !
We are so particular when it comes to our own cars. We need to be as much conscious about other cars, driving safely !

SAHER in KSA

One of the most talked about topics in recent past, in KSA, would be the new traffic system ( Saher).

We have seen so many reports, including that of international agencies, indicating  KSA had one of highest accident rates. That would automatically translate to deaths/injuries, with its effect on families and friends. A young population, good roads, comparatively lower price of cars, thanks to very low duties/taxes, etc may be the reasons. Saher was an idea which was just 'what doctor would have prescribed', literally and otherwise :)

As I earn my bread from the automotive industry, this topic has come up for discussion several times.

  • While a friend became too cautious at the signal and his car was hit from behind
  • Over-speeding and jumping signals were presumed to be the most common 'errors'!
  • Even if you stop at signal, but on 'zebra-crossing', it is a violation.
The fact it is quite automated, this is here to stay. And that is the real good news. As we get fined, we will become more compliant.

But, one common point of discussion is we all need to be doing these even without the electronic-policing. As responsible drivers, it is our minimum duty. But, we forget about our responsibility. Most of us end up of violating, only the degree of violation varies. Just rushing past when yellow light blinked is a violation too, a very common one.

We just need to be more aware of our traffic responsibility and driving around with that awareness... Happy & Safe Driving...

PS: If we were conscious of our similar responsibility and extend same to all our thoughts, words and deeds, this world would be a better place. In that case, Saher could be our inner consciousness... Food for thought!

CoY KSA

The all-new Hyundai Sonata 2010/2011 has been rated the "Best Buy Car - Saudi Arabia" in mid-sized family category by Sport Auto magazine, for its stylish exterior and interior, advanced technologies, comfort and convenience, high performance, durability, spacious cabin, driving dynamics, safety, fuel economy and reasonable price.

This should not come as a big surprise... this model has caught the imagination of all, with its looks and features, though some perceive 'a bit expensive'. Hyundai definitely has a winner here and they are steadily going up the curve, in terms of quality and price-bands.

Road Safety initiative in KSA

Officials are concerned about the high number of deaths on the roads, which according to recent reports amount to 6,000 people a year – about 16 a day. In a bid to improve safety, Jeddah authorities recently introduced an electronic technical inspection management system, called the ‘Tim Service’, which records mechanical inspections on vehicles. This system will be rolled out across the country over the coming months.( Arabian Business)

Confessions of a Toyota Fan

Interesting comparison how Japanese/Toyota handles the recall and an american manufacturer would have done. With all respects to American auto industry, it is definitely the fear of deluge of legal cases that may be preventing them from taking 'a honest' stand. Though Toyota top brass is blamed for the delayed apology, 'better late than never'. Hopefully they will ensure this does not recur.

http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2010/02/17/am-toyota-culture/

What surprises the car lover is the confession:
"Up to now, we had been saying that the rapid expansion was in response to customer needs – that it was inevitable," Akio Toyoda said. "I think the company's sales expanded faster than we were able to train personnel."
Isn't training an integral part of 'Toyota-Way'?

This may open up opportunities for other manufacturers. A survey in US has quoted over 80 % will switch to American brands. But, as Ford dealer in Middle East shared confidentially, 'you don't know, what holds for them in future' ! No one is above suspicion now... It will do well to all other brands to scale up their quality focus

Confessions of a Toyota Fan

Fishing in Troubled waters? As per reports, other cars' dealers in US are trying to reach out to the Toyota customers by offering $1,000 cash back for a switch. This includes GM, Ford, Nissan and Chrysler. With additional recall in the form of  Pickup, for Toyota it continues to be a slide down.... But, knowing Toyota, they will rise and come back from this crisis stronger and live up to their reputation as a quality car manufacturer.

Met couple of friends here at  some of the other leading car dealerships, in Middle East. They are not in a mood to try and swing the public opinion in their favour. Reasons are - Toyota is too strong a brand in ME. Also, they are concerned if their own models would get into this recall whirlpool. After all, the component suppliers are quite common to many manufacturers.

Hence, sharing their concern, it is imperative Toyota comes out of this asap, with minimum further PR damage. The car industry, world over, need this not so small stimulus in the form of quality and safety of cars...
While it is a dream and passion for many to own and drive a car, safety is one of the fundamental aspect of a car!

Confessions of a Toyota Fan

Friday early morning is one of the best time to drive around in Middle East... it is so quite, clean, bright and beautiful..Early or late winter, still better...

With some popular car brands under scrutiny for their safety features, you would prefer to drive when the road is relatively empty.

As I stopped at a traffic signal, I spotted a friend right behind. He had just acquired a new Toyota Fortuner. His expression showed he is still coming to grip with the driving experience. Presumed he would have opted for the friday morning to fine-tune his driving skill.

Suddenly, I wanted move to a different lane, as I remembered how an auto-rickshaw came and banged my car from behind at Pusa Road, New Delhi... that too, as I watched him in the rear-view struggling to apply brake and totally unsuccessful. Unlike Vijay Amrithraj in Bond Film, Octopussy. Thankfully, there was a minor dent on my car and none injured, though the auto was packed to its capacity. I had no choice but to let the poor auto-driver get away with his faulty brake!

The horror one goes through if his Toyota car's brake does not function well, can be visualised !!!

At the next traffic signal, we were parked side by side. We exchange pleasantries and moved on. He said he still regret his decision to rush and buy a Fortuner, rather than buy a Prado. But added he did not like the new Prado design ( Many of us feel the refined look of Prado dilutes its rugged personality)

At the shop, I ran into another friend, this time a Honda Accord owner... !

For a friday morning, 3 is a crowd!

Confessions of a Toyota Fan

I have always been a die-hard fan of Toyota. Hence, when I wanted to buy a new car in Middle East, it was very easy to make a decision.
  • The news of the recent crisis is a big disappointment as it is about quality, something Toyota was always popular for...
  • Now Honda also has announced recall for faulty airbag, driver side
  • Another small news item says, VW to recall its couple of models in Brazil ( over 190 K!)  as 'a component was not sufficiently lubricated, which could cause the rear wheels to seize up or even fall off' !
If Japanese recalls were not sufficient ( both their top 2, Toyota and Honda), now Germans have entered the fray :(

At least these companies have taken the step to recall. Wonder, if other manufacturers are hiding any such, or even more dangerous problems from the innocent ( not so innocent, when we use cellphones while driving) car owners...

CAR-FREE day at Dubai

Wednesday, Feb 17 is car-free day @ Dubai.
Wow, that is quite inspiring! ...at the same time ambitious. Dubai's public transport is not ready yet for a car-free day, esp on a working day.
Weather permitting, people can walk to work or cycle around. But that will be contrary to the very essence of Dubai's ( entire ME) lifestyle. And it is too late to get few camels back on duty too !
But, it is a great goal to work to. Hope more cities in ME will adopt a similar initiative and get the participation of  all citizens, especially educational and health institutions.

Hyundai new launch

Had a sneak preview of Hyundai's new Sonata last week. At a price in range 70-90 K DH/SR (in ME),they have a winner. The design is great. It is already a popular vehicle in its category. Market-leader, Camry, watch out... !

Earlier, while travelling to West, I had a look at the new SUV. The new design, at times reminds of Audi design, looks very refined.

In the year of Soccer World cup, this sponsor is gearing up to take a larger market share. Toyota's loss could be Hyundai's gain !

Toyota halts sales of some vehicles due to pedals - MarketWatch

Is Toyota losing the innovation edge or ignoring the quality/Kaizen aspect of the processes ?

From a customer-perspective, Toyota is synonymous with quality.

The Korean auto makers, Kia and Hyundai, are definitely eating into Toyota's market share. Not because of quality, but the perception of 'value for money'.

Is Toyota on the third stage of 'Five Stages of Decline' by Jim Collins in Built to Last ?

Safe driving

Traffic fines have never been fair... when someone receives a ticket for violation, he complaints about others who are left scot-free for making similar violations, if not more serious. Also, the quantum of fine was always linked to the category of error. But that is now set to change...You may be fined depending on 'your wallet'

At least Europen countries are taking the lead by pegging speeding fines to 'capability' ( not willingness) to pay. That is income-level !Switzerland, Finland, etc are current examples. Many other european countries set to join.

Middle East definitely needs to incorporate this in their traffic rules

Pagani in KSA

Italian car maker Pagani has launched a new line of vehicles in Saudi Arabia, including a luxury car that costs $1.6m, the Saudi Gazette has reported. Several other luxury makes and models are on offer from the car maker, the cheapest priced at $160,000.

'As Saudi Arabia is a wealthy country, the luxury car market has not been affected in the same way as other countries where the automobile industry has been hit hard by the worldwide financial crisis,' Fawwaz A Al-Kredis, general manager of the showroom stocking the cars, told the daily.

China's own stimulus

Chinese govt is trying to get their own citizens to save less and spend more, to offset the drop in demand for their exports.

They have provided for subsidies for car purchase, three times that of US... US provided for $ 3 bn for cash-for-clunkers and $1.7 bn for tax support on car purchase.
China is planning a whopping $14+ bn on tax breaks and subsidies for car purchase !

But the consumer is smarter... they may end up waiting for more support/discounts...

Twitter on Ford Cars

Ford Motor Co. announced technology to let computers read their Twitter feeds to them while behind the wheel.

There is enough distraction already from within the car or outside. Mobile phone is definitely one big cause. Every improvement in the cell phone technology (=higher distraction ) results in higher the risk  while driving.

If car manufacturers are going to play a catalytic role by supporting these distractions, are they not diluting one of their fundamental responsibility ( towards safety) ?

Food for thought !

Luxury car purchase pattern- a shift ?

According to secondary reports coming out of Detroit, the luxury car buyer in US is showing a shift in his purchase patter:
  • most of the luxury car owners who repaced their cars opted for a cheaper model - Buick, Hyundai, for example. While they are willing to down-grade their purchase, the still demand a good finish and reliability, safety.
  • Apart from buying a cheaper car, another trend is to 'trimming size'. They are opting for smaller cars
Frugality is definitely in. Let us hope it remains for a longer duration, even after the market picks up.
Better awareness on global warming and push by NGO's and government agencies should help too.

A challenge for luxury car brands...

Toyota's hybrid Prius faces US Probe over brakes

Acc to reports, Toyota is facing a big challenge.
Its key brand, third generation 2010 hybrid Prius has a brake-problem: ' may malfunction unexpectedly' !

We are living in tough times... esp for auto makers.

No.1/market leader, third generation, one of high profile product... and most important, hybrid... when world is moving slowly, but surely in GO GREEN direction !

We should see minimum or nil 'recalls', a six sigma type of quality !!!
